HYPNOSIS: Get the Real FACTS!

What is hypnosis?

When you hear the word hypnosis, you may imagine the madman popularized in movies, comic books and television. This bearded Svengali waves a pocket watch in front of the glazed eyed subject until he/she falls into a zombi-like state. Once hypnotized, the subject is forced to obey, no matter how strange, illegal or immoral the request. Uttering “Yes, master,” as the hypnotized subject goes about like a human robot doing this Svengali’s evil bidding.

This popular representation bears little resemblance to actual hypnotism. In fact, modern scientific understanding of hypnosis has advanced a great deal in the past few decades. Subjects in a hypnotic trance are not slaves to their “masters” — they have absolute free will. And in fact,  more alert than normal. If someone were to yell “fire” you’d come  out of your trance, to your conscious mind fully and RUN!

Hypnosis is neither Black Magic nor Supernatural, Hypnotists and Hypnotherapist are not Psychics or Palm readers with “Special Powers”. These are educated accredited people who are well trained in researched techniques, hopefully by a recognized organization like the National Guild of Hypnotists.

Hypnosis has been found to be a natural state of being, Hypnotherapy is based on many years of clinical research by famous psychologists such as Dr. Sigmund Freud and Dr. Carl Jung and more recently by Dr. Milton Erikson and Dr. John Kappas. In 1958, the American Medical Association (AMA) accepted clinical hypnosis as an adjunct to standard medical care. The AMA recommended that hypnosis instruction be included in the curricula. Many hospitals now have a hypnosis office. Current and up to date medical doctors have a hypnotist to which they refer patients.

Hypnosis is a form of focus and concentration that reaches past the conscious mind to the powerful subconscious mind, now called the Natural Control System (NCS), the
system that runs the mind/body.

In the hands of trained and skilled hypnotists, hypnosis is highly effective and can offer fast and permanent results, especially when reapplied with self-hypnosis.

Let’s dispel some of the myths concerning hypnosis as described by: William Hewitt in the Llewellyn Encyclopedia.

There are probably more myths, misconceptions, and misinformation about hypnosis than any other subject. This is due in large part to movies, television, and novels that make no attempt to be truthful in dealing with hypnosis. They are more interested in creating dramatic effect than in presenting truth. Drama sells! Truth doesn’t sell. As a result, the public gets fed tons of drama, half-truths, and tons of false information about hypnosis”.

Myth Busting  Falsehoods About Hypnosis

Myth: The hypnotist can make you do things against your will.

Absolutely false. The hypnotist has no power over you at all and cannot make you do anything against your will. Hypnosis is really just self-hypnosis. All the hypnotist does is guide you into a hypnotic state, which you can easily learn to do for yourself, if you wish. The hypnotist is not a master, but a an educated guide, and does not have any special power or magic.

Myth: You can get stuck in hypnosis and never come out.

False again. If you are hypnotized and the hypnotist left the room and never returned, your own mind would pull you safely out of the hypnosis in one of two ways. You would either realize the hypnotist was no longer talking to you, and you would open your eyes and be wide awake and feeling fine, or you would drift into a normal sleep for a few minutes and then wake up normally, feeling fine.

Myth: When hypnotized, you are in a trance and have no control.

Not true. First, you are always awake and aware of what is happening. Hypnosis is like a daydream state. You are awake and aware but are very relaxed with your attention focused on a specific thought or image. Second, you always have control. If the hypnotist told you to rob a bank you would just say, “No” and open your eyes. You would not rob the bank. Of course, if you really wanted to rob a bank anyway, then you would follow the suggestion to do so. The point is that it is you, not the hypnotist, who makes the decision if hypnosis  will work or not work. A healthy dose of skepticism is good, but don’t go into a session with a dogged belief that hypnosis will not work. THEN, it may very well disappoint you.

Myth: Everyone can be hypnotized.

False. No one can be hypnotized against their will. In addition, people with certain mental or neurological conditions cannot be hypnotized. And about one percent of the population cannot be hypnotized for reasons that are not known. However, most people can be hypnotized if they want to be. In fact,  most people experience a natural state of hypnosis on a daily basis.

Myth: Hypnosis can cure anything or solve any personal problem.

No, hypnosis is not a cure-all. Hypnosis is very powerful and can cure, or aid in the cure, of a great many ailments. Hypnosis can also solve a great many personal problems. At times hypnosis can produce what seems to be miracles. But it is not the answer for everything. Hypnosis is a powerful, natural tool we all have available to us to help improve our lives in a great many ways.

Myth: Hypnosis is dangerous.

Untrue. It is quite the opposite. Hypnosis is very safe and natural.

Myth: Only weak-minded people can be hypnotized.

Again, false. The contrary is true. It is much easier to hypnotize people who are intelligent.

Myth: Deep hypnosis is necessary for good results.

Not true. Any level of hypnosis from light to deep can bring good results.

With hypnosis there is no such thing as your not going to wake up, because you’re not sleeping.

You’re not going divulge any deep dark secrets; most people find it somewhat difficult to speak while in a trance.

There is no such thing as doing anything against your will; it is impossible to make you do anything against your will. If one was able to do this why not hypnotize Oprah or Bill Gates and have them share their money with you.

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis; an educated hypnotist guides you into hypnosis and gives you the suggestions you arranged with the hypnotist, that YOU want for change.
